Burning Pumpkin Festival at Tallinn’s Kultuurikatel 30.-31.10.2021

Culture Combo – 2 events in one Hub!

The stars have aligned to place the culmination of the Japanese Animation Film Festival upon All Hallows Eve – and that means viewers get a rich cultural program at the intersection of Eastern tradition and Halloween spirit. Impressive arrangements by young artists will turn the Tallinn Creative Hub into a horror film set, and we invite you to come and feel the vibe! Japanese animation will take you into the spirit realm, while a classical horror movie run will tickle the visitors’ giblets. Cosplayers will compete in an otherworld-themed event. Demons, vampires, goths and others are welcome on stage! (That said, all anime and videogame characters are also eligible.) A masterclass in genre makeup will be given by professional makeup artists from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

A special program of Yakutian genre cinema is prepared just for you – a unique phenomenon in modern global filmmaking. For the first time in Estonia, you will be able to enjoy an exhibition by photographer Aleksei Vasiljev that goes behind the scenes of Sahawood, Yakutia’s dream factory. We will learn all about the spiritual traditions of the Saha people. Yakutia is the land of diamonds: the festival will feature a display of jewelry showcasing the Northern stones, and one of the guests will be lucky enough to win a real diamond!

The retro gaming zone is the place to fight zombies and other ghouls. A masterclass in Warhammer 40K will headline an entire selection of panels. Shop at Estonia’s biggest bazaar of youth subculture merchandise, and find a unique hand-crafted piece in the Artist Alley.

Hundreds of pumpkins will be used to decorate the Kultuurikatel building. We have prepared masterclasses in the preparation of this bright autumnal vegetable. Other, less spooky food options will also be available – or you can take part in our Pumpkin Latte competition. If coffee is not your thing, why not enjoy a variety of specialty teas?

The musical program will culminate in a showcase concert by composer Sven Grünberg, the author of dozens of animation and feature film scores. This will surely be a Samhein to remember!
